How the words to minutes converter works

Type your word count — or paste your whole script — and the calculator converts it to speaking time instantly. It divides your words by your pace in words per minute (wpm): at the average speaking rate of 140 wpm, every 140 words costs you one minute of stage time. Preparing something formal and deliberate? Switch to 110 wpm. Fast, energetic delivery? 170 wpm. You can also set any custom rate once you know your own speed.

The tool is built for speeches, presentations, voice-overs, podcasts, video scripts, wedding toasts, and classroom assignments — anywhere you have words on a page and a clock to respect. Not sure what your pace is? Our average speaking rate guide shows you how to measure it in under a minute.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert words to minutes?

Divide your word count by your speaking rate in words per minute. For example, 700 words at an average pace of 140 wpm is 700 ÷ 140 = 5 minutes. Our calculator does this instantly and lets you adjust the pace.

How many words per minute is a normal speaking pace?

Most people speak at 120–150 words per minute during presentations, with 140 wpm as the standard planning figure. Slow, formal delivery runs around 110 wpm; energetic speakers reach 170+ wpm.

How many words is a 5-minute speech?

About 700 words at an average pace — between 550 words (slow) and 850 words (fast). See our detailed 5-minute speech guide for tables and examples.

Is speaking time the same as reading time?

No. Silent reading averages 225 wpm — about 60% faster than speaking. If you’re timing how long a text takes to read rather than deliver, use our Reading Time Calculator instead.
